We’ve compiled a collection of words and terms to assist you in your art endeavors.

Abstract - In painting or sculpture, the presentation emphasizes a derived essential character with little or no visual reference to objects in nature.

Abstract Expressionism A painting style in which the process is largely uncontrolled, accidental, sometimes unthinking, automatic and direct. The painted surface becomes a record of the artist’s intense experience with paint and color. The work of American artist Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) is best reflective of abstract expressionism.

bottega – A shop or studio (studio-shop) of an Italian artist.

Classical Art – The painting, sculpture and architecture of the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Cubism - In cubist artwork, the subject matter is broken up and re-assembled in an abstracted form. Instead of depicting the subject from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a number of viewpoints to represent the subject in greater context. The background and objects interpenetrate one another to create a shallow ambiguous space, one of cubism's distinct characteristics. The work of Spanish painter Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) best reflects cubism.

collage - A composition made by pasting together on a flat surface various materials such as newspapers, printed text, and photographs, illustrations and cloth.

complementary colors Pairs of colors, such as red and green that together embraces the entire spectrum. Thus the compliment of one of the three primary colors is a mixture of the other two.

composition - The organization or grouping of the different forms and or figures of a work of art so as to achieve a unified whole.
